Question :
I’ve just setup a new eMail-account, and everything looks okay, but even though the account’s Inbox-icon in OSX Mail.app shows the correct number of unread eMails in a badge next to it, nothing shows when I open the mailbox…
…it’s completely empty
What’s wrong ?
Answer :
This is a bug in Mail.app
This has been fixed in the update to OSX 10.8.5, ย so if you are running OSX 10.8 “Mountain Lion”, update to OSX 10.8.5 and all should be okay ๐
If you’re running MacOSX 10.7 “Lion”, don’t bother upgrading to OSX 10.8.5 “Mountain Lion”, since OSX 10.9 “Mavericks” is due to arrive within weeks…
…your best option is to fix this manually (until you update to OSX 10.9 “Mavericks”) :
1- quit Mail.app
2- go to Applications –> Utilities –> Disk Utility, and run that application
3- in Disk Utility, select your “Macintosh HD” (or whatever you’ve renamed it) partition from the list on the left, then select the tab labelled “First Aid” and click on the “Repair Disk Permissions”-button
4- just wait, and when the Repair-process is complete, exit Disk Utility
5- open Mail.app again, and select your troubled Inbox again, now everything should be okay ๐
…if not : repeat steps 1 to 5 and include a complete Restart of your Mac inbetween step 4 and step 5
That’s it !

It works – thank you.
