fixed : iPhone app is suddenly in language I don’t understand

Question :
I can use my iPhone as I always used to, but yesterday I found that I cannot use one of the app I need to use on a daily basis any longer because all language displayed by that app is now in Japanese or Chinese or some similar language that I don’t understand as I only use Roman script myself… Oddly, this is the only app that has this problem, all my other apps are still in English…

How can I swithc back to English in that particular app ?

Answer :
In iOS 18 (and maybe in iOS 17 or even in iOS 16) each app has the option to use either your preferred iOS language or any other language that the developer wishes to include in the app. Some developers use this option, others don’t. So some apps have the option to switch the app-language and others don’t.

To switch the language of any app, do this :
– open the Settings.app on your iPhone
– on the Settings page that opens, scroll down to the bottom and click on “Apps”
– on the Apps page that opens, find the app that you have language problems in (they’re listed in alphabetical order) and click on the app’s name
– in the App-specific page that opens, click on “Language”
– note : if you do not see the “Language” option, there is only one language available for this app (probably English or you preferred local language)
– in the Language page that opens, click on the language of your preference
– make sure there now is a check mark at the right of your preferred language
– then close the Settings.app
– now, open the app that you were having problems with and see that is is now working as expected

That’s it !

fixed : blurred translations in Apple Translate.app after upgrade to iOS 18

Question :
Yesterday I installed iOS 18. so far so good. At least, that is what I thought… but now, when I try to use Apple’s own iOS Translate.app on my iPhone all translations are blurred out when I typ texts that I want translated (curiously, when I speak the same texts in the microphone, they are displayed properly and translations are not blurred out) All translated texts are blurred out, even if I switch languages or restart the app.

What can I do ?

Answer :
Easiest solution to this is reinstalling the app. To do that, do these steps :
– on your iPhone, find the icon of the translate.app
– press & hold the app’s icon until a popup menu appears
– in the popup menu, click on ‘Remove App’
– in the next ‘Remove “Translate”?’ popup that appears, click on ‘Remove App’
– now the app will be gone from your iPhone
– then, open the AppStore.app on your iPhone
– when the AppStore opens, typ “Apple Translate” in the search field
– in the list of found apps, scroll down to the app called ‘Translate’ (currently a black icon with a globe grid and a white text balloon with the letter A in it on the left side and a blue text balloon with a foreign character on the right side)
– make sure that the developer listed for this app is ‘Apple’ and the type of app is ‘Utilities’ (if you long-press on the app icon, you will see some in-depth info on the app where you can double-check this)
– then click the ‘download from cloud’ icon at the right
– the download clock icon will now show it is being downloaded and turn into an ‘Open’ button when done
– the Translate.app will now be available on your iPhone once again, and it will now work properly
– if you want the Translate.app on another page of your iPhone’s icon screens, long-press the app’s icon and choose ‘Edit Home Screen’ from the popup menu

That’s it !

fixed : switching the language of the spelling check in iOS5, iOS6, iOS7, iOS8, iOS9, iOS10, iOS11 & iOS12

Question :

Is it possible to (quickly) switch the language of the spelling check while I’m writing a message on my iPhone ?

Answer :

Yes !

It’s really simple :

1- make sure you have installed multiple languages / multiple keyboards on your iPhone or iPad : Go to Settings –> General –> Keyboard –> (International) Keyboards –> Add New Keyboard…

…and select your desired languages from the list (then exit the Settings-app)

2- you have now installed not only the keyboard for each language, but also the spelling check… and it’s now available in any text or message you type (including SMS)

3- to switch the language of the spelling check, just tap on the globe-key next to the space-bar : when tap it, the space-bar will (only for a quick second) display the name of the keyboard you’re using… but… the language of the active keyboard layout is also the language of the active spelling check…
