tip : most basic car stereo with good iPhone & iPod compatibility

Question :

The car stereo in my (rather old) car has broken down, so now I need a new one…

What is the (most) basic one that has good compatibility with a recent iPhone for playing music ?

Answer :

Considering that the relevance of any suggestion regarding buying electronics is always a temporary advise, as technology keeps progressing rather quickly and always depends on the way and intensity of your use…

…the best value-for-money deal you can get is :

Pioneer MVH-160UI car stereo (2014 model)                     find it in the UK or Germany

or it’s predecessor which is technically similar, for which you might get a better discount deal :

Pioneer MVH-150UI car stereo (2013 model)                     find it in the UK or Germany

The main advantages of these are :

  • certified iPod & iPhone compatibility, including “Direct Control” of your iOS7-device from the car stereo’s interface
  • front-accessible USB (for use with iOS-device, Android-device or USB-stick) that will also charge your iPhone or iPod during driving
  • AUX-in (for any other music player)
  • no CD (or cassette) player
  • quality radio tuner (with RDS, Traffic Announcement & Radiostation-presets)
  • quality sound output (with 5-band graphic equalizer and 4x 50W RCA pre-amp output)

Of note is that there is also a Sony car stereo with similar pricing and similar capabilities, but unconfirmed rumors say it’s not compatible with the latest iOS7-devices…

Sony DSX A30 car stereo (model 2013)                         find it in the US, UK or Germany

If you are in need of a telephone carkit also, your will be even more happy with a car stereo  that adds Bluetooth connectivity to your iPhone also :

JVC KD-X250BT car stereo                                          find it in the US, UK or Germany

or the Bluetooth car-kit versions of the Pioneer car stereos mentioned above :

Pioneer MVH-X360BT car stereo (model 2014)             find it in the US, UK or Germany

or it’s predecessor :

Pioneer MVH-350BT car stereo (model 2013)               find it in the UK or Germany

tip : discounted and refurbished Macs, iPads & iPods on Dutch online Apple Store

I don’t have any idea how long this has been around, but I had not yet come across this info :

Apple is now selling refurbished (*) Apple-hardware like Macs, iPads, iPods and accessories though the Dutch online Apple Store.

Go here to see if what you’re looking for is available at more-interesting-than-usual “Special Deal” prices.

(*) “refurbished” would mean that these hardware products have been produced from hardware that was either taken out of the primary production process or returned to Apple, of which all malfunctioning parts have been replaced by (as-good-as-)new parts ; due to the fact that this refurbished hardware has been thoroughly tested, this hardware comes with 1 year of limited Apple-warranty and the option to buy additional AppleCare.

Enjoy !

fixed : OSX refuses to install app from “unidentified developer”

Question :

I have an app that I have been using in the past, and I now recently, I was in a situation where I needed that same app, so I downloaded the latest version and tried to install, but I get a message that reads “[app name] can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer”…

Isn’t there any option to install the software anyway ?

Answer :

Installing this app is being blocked by the Gatekeeper function that has been in MacOSX since the last versions of MacOSX 10.7 Lion (Gatekeeper was introduced with upgrade 10.7.5 to be exact).

More info on Gatekeeper can be found here.

If you have good experience with the product and you are sure you have downloaded the installer from a reliable source, you can install the app regardless of the warning.

To do so, do one of these :

– go to the icon of the app, right-click (option-click) on it, and select “Open” from the pulldown menu

– go to System Preferences, then to Security & Privacy, and in the window that opens, select the “General”-tab, then leave “Allow apps downloaded from:” at “Mac App Store and identified developers” ; beneath that, you will see a text “[app name] was blocked from opening because it is not from an identified developer”… there you should click on the “Open Anyway”-button… using that, the rest of the install-process will go as expected

Enjoy !

info : is the FREE Time Tracker app compatible with OSX 10.9 Mavericks ?

Question :

I am a freelancer, and therefore I need a time tracking-app. I have been using the FREE “Time Tracker”-app (that was originally made by Ivan Dramaliev in 2005) for some years now to great joy. I am now on the verge of upgrading to OSX 10.9 Mavericks, but I’ve heard that this upgrade will turn old software from the PowerPC-Mac era obsolete…

I’ve looked on the internet, but I can’t find any info on this :

is Time Tracker app compatible with OSX 10.9 Mavericks ?

Answer :

Time Tracker app will run in OSX 10.9 Mavericks

But… there’s a few things you should know :

– no thorough testing has been done on the compatibility with OSX 10.9 Mavericks, so there might still be some minor bugs or incompatibilities… (but generally speaking, you should be able to open your existing Time Tracker files, and create new ones)

– the latest version of the FREE Time Tracker app is version 1.3.13 (beta) and has been released by Rainer Burgstaller in January 2011 (so about 3 years ago), this version can be downloaded from his website or from the project’s GoogleDev-page here

– Rainer has stated that he has ambitions with Time Tracker, but he has little time to work on it… so Time Tracker might not be a good choice if you’re looking for a future-proof solution…

– the built-in Gatekeeper function of OSX will refuse the install of Time Tracker initially, since  it is considered to be from an “unidentified developer”… for instructions on how to bypass this, look here
