fixed : macOS Mail.app can’t setup Planet.nl eMail account as IMAP

Posted on 23-06-2021 by MacManus.nl
1

Question :

I have macOS 10.15 Catalina and Mail.app 13.4 and for some reason, I am now getting an error saying that Mail.app can’t get new mail from my Planet.nl eMail account, even though it used to run without any problem for the past years (I had been using the mailserver setting outlined in this post without running into any problems).

I have tried creating a new eMail account for my Planet.nl-account in Mail.app, but that wasn’t possible without deleting the previously used Planet.nl-account from Mail.app first. But even after deleting the previous Planet.nl-account, whenever I try to setup a new eMail account for my Planet.nl-account, it is automatically set up as a POP3-mailbox and I can’t find any way to change it to an IMAP-mailbox afterwards…

Even though it works as a POP3-mailbox, I don’t want a POP3-mailbox since I want to use it on multiple devices constantly : I want to use it on my Mac, my iPhone and my iPad without running into syncing problems.

How do I setup my Planet.nl-account as an IMAP-mailbox on Mail.app ?

Answer :

The problem you are running into seems to have to do with the fact that it’s a long long time ago (actually in the summer of 2008, so nearly 15 years ago) that internetprovider Planet.nl was integrated into (or ‘replaced by’ if you prefer) it’s mother-brand internetprovider KPN, which meant that all Planet.nl mail-servers were replaced by KPNmail.nl mail-servers.

Here’s how to fix this :

  • first open Safari (your internet browser) and goto your KPN Webmail : https://webmail.kpnmail.nl/mail/logon.asp
  • login using username@planet.nl (your Planet.nl eMail address) as your login
  • see if the password that you are using works here to login
  • if your password doesn’t work, see if you can find the password that does work to login to the KPN Webmail website
  • if you still can’t find the correct password, go here to reset it : https://www.kpn.com/service/internet/e-mail/wachtwoord-of-gebruikersnaam-vergeten.htm
  • then, open Mail.app on your Mac to delete the existing Planet.nl eMail-account
  • goto Mail (in the top menu bar) > Prefereces > Accounts (tab) > select the Planet.nl account (from the list on the left) > – (the button with a minus-sign ; a.k.a. ‘delete’)
  • then goto Apple-icon (top-left in upper menu bar) > System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Add Other Account (bottom option on the right)
  • now, in the window that opens, DO NOT type username@planet.nl as the new eMail address, but use username@kpnmail.nl instead !!! (even if you have never used username@kpnmail as your eMail address, it is available for you if you have a username@planet.nl eMail address)
  • now you will get an error message AND the option to manually choose either POP or IMAP
  • at ‘E-mailadres:’ put username@planet.nl (= the Planet.nl eMail address you want to use)
  • at ‘Gebruikersnaam:’ put accountname@planet.n (= the Planet.nl account that usually consists of your last name and 3 numbers ; do not forget to add @planet.nl after it)
  • at ‘Wachtwoord:” put your password (the one that works for KPN Webmail)
  • at ‘Type account:’ choose IMAP
  • at ‘Server inkomende e-mail:’ put imap.kpnmail.nl
  • at ‘Server uitgaande e-mail:’ put smtp.kpnmail.nl
  • then click the ‘Log in’-button
  • Then open Mail.app and see that your Planet.nl eMail-account has been added and that your mail is being fetched

That’s it !

enjoy 😉

fixed : easily generate a new random password in macOS

Posted on 16-01-2020 by MacManus.nl

Question :

I need to generate a random password for a new online account for an app, but for some reason, macOS doesn’t suggest a Strong Password as usual…

How can I easily generate a random strong password ?

Answer :

When using Safari on macOS, Safari will automatically suggest a Safari Strong Password (and backs it up to iCloud) whenever a field where you need to manually type a new password…

However : this feature is Safari-only (as the name Safari Strong Password suggests), so if you need to manually type a new password into an app (or anything outside of Safari) this automatic suggestion won’t kick into play…

Luckily, macOS has a Password Generator built-in… only tricky thing is it’s a little hard to access… there are 2 ways to get the Password Generator to start up (and an alternative in case you need extra features) :

– Option 1 –

  • Apple Menu > System Prefs > Users & Groups > Change Password > Key Icon
  • now Password Assistant opens in a separate window
  • Close previous window (that is now in the background) by clicking Cancel-button
  • Back to Password Generator window
  • set type of password you need
  • Generate password
  • Copy password
  • Close Password Generator window

– Option 2 –

  • User’s Home Folder > Applications > Utilities > KeychainAccess.app
  • now the Keychain window opens
  • click on the Plus-sign button ( or press the CMD + N key combo on your keyboard )
  • now a pulldown window opens
  • at “Password”, on the right, click the ‘black key’-button
  • now Password Assistant opens in a separate window
  • note : leave the Keychain Access window in the background, as trying to close it will also close the Password Assistant window
  • in the Password Assistant window, set the type of password you need
  • then, generate the new password
  • copy the password
  • switch to the window where you need to paste the new password
  • then, switch back to the Keychain Access window and close it

 – Alternative option –

If macOS’ built-in Password Generator doesn’t allow you to get a random password that suits your needs, for example if you need a memorable password, you can get the StrongPassword.app for FREE from the Mac AppStore.

StrongPassword.app has 3 main options of automatic password generation :

  • “Basic”
  • “Advanced”
  • “Words”
  • note : all 3 come with the option of adding or omitting symbols like  ! ? @ & * _ + =
  • The “Words” option comes closest to the (now obsolete) “Memorable” option that used to be built-in in macOSX and OSX

that’s it !

enjoy 😉

fixed : Strong Password that Safari suggests is not accepted for this web-account

Posted on 16-01-2020 by MacManus.nl
Reply

Question :

To get access to a website I need for school, I need to create a new account. While doing so, Safari suggests a Strong Password, but when I accept to use it, the website gives an error since the Safari Strong Password format does not comply with the rules that this website has for passwords : at least 8 digits, of which at least one undercast letter, one capital letter, one number and choice from only a very limited set of symbols. Unfortunately, the ‘minus’-symbol that is used in each Safari-generated Strong Password is not allowed for this website…

How can I generate a random password that will be accepted by this website ?

Answer :

Some websites do not allow the automatically-generated password format of Safari Strong Password, because they only allow capital and undercast letters, numbers and a limited array of symbols, in that case, Safari Strong Password cannot be used to automatically generate a strong password

  • Use the StrongPassword.app (FREE on the Mac AppStore)
  • StrongPassword.app has 3 main options of automatic password generation : “Basic”, “Advanced” and “Words”
  • Even in the “Basic” password generation setting it’s possible to have the password generation include exactly the Symbols, Punctuation marks and Brackets that are allowed in your particular case
  • what sets this app apart from nearly every other password generating app are 2 features :
    • it has an option to generate a random memorable password : “Words” comes closest to the (now obsolete) “Memorable” option that used to be in macOSX and OSX
    • on top of that : it’s a FREE app
  • when the password of your liking is generated, you can copy-paste it onto the website

enjoy 😉

fixed : iPhone keeps asking for old eMail-account’s password

Posted on 22-11-2018 by MacManus.nl

Question :

On my iPhone I keep getting a warning message that I need to log in to an old eMail-account that I no longer own. I just need the old mailbox around on my Mac because I might need to access the old eMails sometime in the future, but I don’t need any of it on my iPhone.

What can I do ?

Answer :

On your Mac, you just need to set the account to ‘Inactive’. To do so, do this :

  • open Mail.app
  • in the top menu bar, top left, next to the Apple-logo, click on Mail
  • in the pulldown-menu, click on Accounts
  • in the new window that opens, click on the old eMail-account in the list on the left
  • in the info that appears, make sure that “Enable this account” is unchecked

Then, on your iPhone, make sure that the old eMail-address is not active in any way :

  • open the Settings.app
  • in the window that opens (“Settings”), scroll down and click on Mail
  • in the window that opens (“Mail”), click on Notifications
  • in the window that opens (“Notifications”), see if the old eMail-address is listed
  • if it’s not listed, you’re okay
  • if it is listed, click on it
  • in the window that opens, switch “Allow Notifications” to OFF
  • then go back/exit to the first window of the Settings.app (“Settings”)
  • click on Notes
  • in the window that opens (“Notes”), at “Default Account” click on the account name on the right
  • in the window that opens (“Default Account”), see if your old eMail-address is listed
  • if it is not listed, you’re okay
  • if it is listed, make sure it isn’t checked as your Default Account
  • then go back / exit to the iPhone’s main screen
  • open the Notes.app
  • Note : you might get a warning message here saying you need to input your old eMail-account’s password… if so, just deny
  • in the window that opens (“Notes”), click on the orange <-icon top left
  • in the window that opens (“Folders”), see if the old eMail-account is listed
  • if it is not listed, you’re okay
  • if it is listed, see how many notes each folder contains, and write those numbers down
  • then click on the >-icon at the right of the old eMail-account
  • in the window that opens (“Notes”), you will see all of the notes that are still on the old eMail-account
  • then click on Edit (top right)
  • then click on Move All (bottom left)
  • in the window that opens, select a folder to move these old notes to (I would suggest to move them to your iCloud account’s folder, but you can choose any other folder, or you can create a new folder by clicking on “New Folder”)
  • then, in the window that opens (“Folders”), your old eMail-account will still be listed, but the number of notes in it will be 0 (and the number of notes in the folder that you’ve previously chosen will have increased by the exact number that was in your old eMail-account)
  • then go back / exit to the iPhone’s main screen
  • open the Settings.app
  • in the window that opens (“Settings”), scroll down and click on “Passwords & Accounts”
  • in the window that opens (“Passwords & Accounts”), see if the old eMail-address is listed
  • if it is not listed, you’re okay
  • if it is listed, see if anything is mentioned below it (e.g. “Inactive”, “Mail” of “Notes”) and click on the >-icon at the right of it
  • in the window that opens, make sure that everything is switched to OFF (e.g. “Mail” and “Notes”)
  • when the “are you sure you want to continue?” pop-up opens, you can now click on “Delete from My iPhone” since you have just moved your notes to another account
  • Note : you might run into a bug here that prevents you from switching of Notes for your old eMail-account, if so : just leave it
  • now go back / exit to your iPhone’s main screen

That’s it !

enjoy 😉

fixed : “Your iCloud Account Settings Are Out Of Date” error in Windows 10 Mail app

Posted on 11-12-2017 by MacManus.nl
6

Question :

I have installed the iCloud application on my PC running Windows 10, and added my iCloud email-address to Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) without a problem, but now I keep getting an error message saying “Your iCloud Account Settings Are Out Of Date”… when I click on it, I get an option to have this fixed by Windows 10 itself, but then nothing happens… the problem remains, and I am not receiving any eMails in my iCloud mailbox…

I have checked on iCloud.com and my PC is listed as a registered device, and there is no error showing in the iCloud application on Windows either…

What can I do to fix this ?

Answer :

Somewhere during 2017 Apple has changed the security settings of the iCould services : it is now obligatory to enable two-factor-authentication on your iCloud account if you want to connect from any non-Apple device : from now on you will need to generate an application-specific password for Windows Mail.app (or Outlook)…

Here’s how to do that :

  1. setup two-factor-authentication on your iCloud account as outlined here
  2. then, make sure you have the iCloud for Windows application installed on your PC ; if you need to reinstalled it, you can download it here
  3. then, make sure you have the iCloud for Windows application setup properly ; open the iCloud for Windows application and make sure there is a checkmark at “Mail” (and at “Contacts”, “Calendars” and “Tasks” if you want to sync those also)
  4. then, make sure you have added your iCloud mailbox to Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) ; if it’s not listed, add it (again)
  5. then, generate an application specific password as outlined here
  6. then, make sure that you input the application specific password you have just generated as the password for your iCloud mailbox in the Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) Settings

That’s it !

NOTE : do NOT use your regular iCloud-password for Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) any longer, it won’t work.

enjoy 😉

BEWARE ! : iOS 11.2 HomeKit bug !!

Posted on 08-12-2017 by MacManus.nl

There is a security-bug in the first versions HomeKit on iOS 11.2

In version 11.2 of iOS, it is possible to take control of your all you HomeKit devices like smart lights, smart locks and smart thermostats.

Solution :

Upgrade your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 11.2.x or iOS 11.3 or newer when they are released !

For now Apple has fixed this by altering the settings on the HomeKit servers, but a solution for iOS itself is in the works, so upgrade to a newer version of iOS when there is one available !

BEWARE ! : macOS 10.13 High_Sierra must be updated !!

**** B E W A R E ****

There is a security-bug in the first versions of macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

In version 10.13 (10.13.0) and 10.13.1 of macOS High Sierra, it is possible to take control of your Mac by just logging in as ‘root’ and leaving the password blank…

Solution :

Upgrade to macOS High_Sierra 10.13.2 or newer !

Apple has fixed this by releasing an updated version of High_Sierra, so for your own safety, you should upgrade your macOS !

Note : this security-bug was introduced in High_Sierra, so it is no problem in earlier versions of macOS and OSX, including macOS 10.12 Sierra
