Question :

I have installed Steam on my Mac, and have played several games on it. It’s great, but now I’ve found that some of the games I want to play are Windows-only, even on Steam. I get a “not supported on this platform” error.

Is there any way to play Windows-only Steam games on my Mac ?

Answer :

Yes there is.

Probably the easiest way to be able to play Windows-only Steam games on your Mac is to download and install NVIDIA GeForce NOW Cloud Gaming for Mac. At this moment of writing the service is in (FREE) Beta and only available in Europe and North America, but that will change in due time.

Do do so, just do this :

download the NVIDIA GeForce NOW app here
then install it and run it on your Mac
first you need to login by creating an NVIDIA account (or using your Google or Facebook account, which will also share your personal user data with those parties and their associates)
then you will need to test the speed and reliability of your internet connection, to do so, click on your username in the upper right corner and select “Test my network” from the pulldown menu
only if your internet connection is reliable and fast enough you will be able to proceed (sorry… this is one of the few disadvantages of cloud-computing…)
if you need to optimize your internet connection, you can use a direct Ethernet/UTP-cable from your internet modem to your Mac, and adjust or shut down your Firewall (that’s about the only thing you can optimize, full instructions can be found here)
now, inside the NVDIA GeForce NOW app, you will be able to log into your Steam account and browse for games as usual
you will now see that even the Windows-only games are available for you to run on your Mac

That’s it !

fixed : Clash Royale hangs at “Transaction Pending” after in-app purchase request

Question :

My son wanted to do an in-app purchase in the Clash Royale game on his iPad. Since his purchases are restricted by Parental Approval, he sent out a purchase request to me.

I didn’t receive the purchase request however, not on my iPhone and not on my iPad, so I couldn’t approve it. So now my son’s game hangs at “Transaction Pending”.

What can we do ?

Answer :

There seems to be a bug in the connection of the Clash Royale app and the iOS App Store regarding in-app purchases, where Parental Approval Requests are not being send out properly to iOS devices like iPhones and iPads.

The Parental Approval Requests are properly being send to OSX (macOS) computers however, so the solution is rather simple : check your Mac, you will probably be able to approve the in-app purchase there.

Note : if you don’t have a computer you might be able to resolve this if you borrow a Mac (or PC) and login with your Apple-account, if that’s not an option right now, contact Apple’s AppStore Helpdesk via phone or chat here : https://getsupport.apple.com

fixed : delete hacked Pokémon GO (TuTu-hack) from iPhone

Question :

My children have downloaded and installed a hacked version of Pokémon GO on their iPhone using the TuTuHelper-hack.

Now we want to uninstall, but that doesn’t seem to work when we do it the standard way (by deleting the app-icon by pressing on it until the X-badge appears and then clicking that)… What can we do ?

Answer :

TuTuHelper was installed as a developer trail-app using a developer certificate. The hacked version of Pokémon GO was installed subsequently as another developer trail-app using another developer certificate.

You shouldn’t install developer certificates from any developer that you can’t 100% trust, as you are granting that developer permission to access your iPhone’s (or iPad’s) data… and worst case scenario is that that is far more than you’ve bargained for…

To uninstall both of them, do this :

on your iPhone, go to Settings –> General –> Profiles & Devices –> CompanyApps
there, click on “Wuxi Suntech Power Co.,…” and in the next screen, click on “Delete app” to delete “TuTu Helper”
Note : if you do not see the “Delete App” option appearing, you have to temporarily lift the ban on deleting apps you have set in Settings –> General –> Restrictions and try again
next, click on “Jin Brand Co., Ltd.” and in the next screen, click on “Delete app” to delete “Pokémon GO” (the hacked version)
if you want to make sure your children will not reinstall hacked apps like that again, go to Settings –> General –> Restrictions and set a ban there on “Installing apps” (and preferably on “Deleting apps” also)
then restart the iPhone by pressing the physical Home-Button (front) and ON/OFF-Button (top or right) simultaneously until the screen goes completely black and the Apple logo reappears

fixed : install Minecraft 1.9 on managed user account in OSX 10.11 El_Capitan

Question :

My children would like to play Minecraft on their Macs, but they have managed OSX user accounts with Parental Controls turned on. After downloading Minecraft from the Mojang website, I can do the usual install by drag&drop, but when double-clicking the Minecraft-app, I get an error message saying that if I am trying to run Minecraft from the .dmg, I should first move it to the Applications folder. I am trying to run it from within the Applications folder however…

Is there any way to fix this ?

Answer :

Yes there is, but since OSX 10.11 El_Capitan is keeping Java out of view (and away from use and install), the solution is different from the one that used to work before. [see previous post on this subject]

Here’s how to install Minecraft 1.9 (and newer ?) on a managed user account in OSX 10.11 El_Capitan :

login to OSX using the restricted user account
go to Mojang.com
login using your eMail-address (not your username) and your password
download the MacOSX-version there
after downloading, open the .dmg file by double-clicking on it
as instructed, drag the Minecraft-icon onto the Applications-folder-icon next to it to install
then, open the System Preferences and click on Parental Controls
when asked, login with your administrator’s name & password
in the window that opens, select the restricted user’s name from the list at the left
then click the “Apps”-tab and make sure there’s a checkmark at “Limit Applications on this Mac” and type “minecraft” in the Search field
then put a checkmark in front of all Minecraft-apps that are listed ; which might be “minecraft” and/or “Minecraft Launcher” (if no Minecraft apps are listed, skip this step)
then click the “Web”-tab and make sure there’s a checkmark at “try to limit access to adult websites” and click the “Customize…”-button
in the window that opens, at “always allow access to these websites:”, click the PlusSign-button and enter these websites :
- https://launcher.mojang.com
- https://launchermeta.mojang.com
- https://::ffff:54.230.128.94
- https://::ffff:54.192.130.117
then click OK
now, open the Applications folder and double-click the Minecraft-app
when the Minecraft-app opens, left-click [CMD-click] it’s icon in the Dock and select “Keep in Dock” from the popup-list
if confronted with an error message saying access to one or more websites is needed, but not allowed, type your administrator’s name & password to allow access and proceed
now, Minecraft should launch without a problem
if Minecraft still won’t launch, just redo this procedure from start (since, for some reason one of the settings needed did not jet stick…) and you should be alright

fixed : login to AmbraSoft online school training on an age restricted user account

Question :

Our children have a restricted ‘parental guidance’ user account on our old MacBook running MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. Just the other day, they got an activation code for the AmbraSoft online learning system (called “Ambrasoft Home via School”).

We tried to run the online module (a.k.a. ‘the website’) on their MacBook (in their user account), but it didn’t run…

…what can we do ?

Answer :

Good thing your children are on a restricted ‘parental guidance’ use account.

The only thing you need to do is give their user account access to the website running the login for AmbraSoft (it’s not on the AmbraSoft website itself… that’s the problem…)

Here’s how to :

1- open Safari and enter this URL :

http://www.ambrasoft.nl

2- then click the button “Direct inloggen” (“Login straight away”) and you will be transferred to this website :

https://familiepakket.mijnklas.nl/Login

3- then click on the pink button named “AmbraSoft thuis via school” (“AmbraSoft Home via School”) and you will be transferred to this URL :

https://www.mijnklas.nl/homeuse/login

4- type your login name and your password and click on the blue button “Inloggen” (“Login”) and you should be transferred to this URL :

https://www.mijnklas.nl/Bedroom

…instead, you will get an error since login failed

5- if you’re using Safari 5.1.x you should now go to “Venster” (“Window”) in the top menu bar and then select “Activiteitenoverzicht” (“Activity Display”)

if you’re using Safari 8.x you should now go to “Develop”, then to “Show Web Inspector” and then select “Bedroom” and “Images” ; there you will see al lot of PNG-images that come from a URL that looks like this : xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net/AmbraSoftContent/

6- in the window that opens (in Safari 5.1.x), you will see a lot of URLs listed, all starting out similar to this :

https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net/AmbraSoftContent/Web/

in which xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is a code containing both letters and numbers

7- write down the URL you are finding

8- then, open the System Preferences, click on the padlock in the bottom bar, and type your administrator login and password ; then select your children’s user account and click on the “Web” tab

9- make sure the checkmark is in the “Restrict access to websites using explicit materials, then click on the “Adjust…”-button and a pulldown window will open

10- in the upper part (“always allow access to these websites”) click on the plus-sign button and you will get an empty line

11- in that line, type the URL you have previously written down and that looks like this :

https://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net/AmbraSoftContent/Web/

12- then click the “OK”-button and exit the System Preferences

13- then go back to Safari and open this URL :

https://www.mijnklas.nl/Bedroom

14- now you will be able to login and you can start working in Ambrasoft online

Question :

My children are really exited about playing the LEGO Batman 3 “Beyond Gotham” game.

Now they keep asking me how to collect as many studs (money-points) as possible quickly and easily.

Can you help me ?

Answer :

Probably the best place in the entire game to collect stud-money easily is in the “Lantern Menace”-level. There you should electrocute the tentacles on the left side. Then there will be fire. To collect studs, extinguish the fire using a character that has ice-breath (like any version of Superman, Supergirl or Superboy) or an ice-gun (like Captain Cold, Mr. Freeze, Geoff Johns and Batman in Arctic Suit). Note that this can be done extra quickly when playing the game with two players instead of just one, since simply switching players enables you to continuously collect studs, either through player 1 or player 2.

Using the Red Bricks for “Studs x2”, “Studs x4”, “Studs x6”, “Studs x8” and/or “Studs x10” will of course multiply your collection of stud-money even more…

Question :

My children are really exited about playing the LEGO Batman 3 “Beyond Gotham” game.

Now they keep asking me how to unlock the character called “Green Loontern” (who looks like Daffy Duck in a Green Lantern suit). I’ve searched the internet, but I can’t find the answer to where to unlock the character for Free Play mode.

Can you help me ?

Answer :

The solution appears to be rather simple :

Just play the game in Free Play and achieve all Green Loontern mini-challenges in each Hub world.
