fixed : finding faces in imported old iPhoto pictures

Question :

I have imported my old iPhoto database into Photos.app as you described in your post on this subject. [click here to view the original post] But now I’ve got them into Photos.app it turns out that the faces I had tagged when I was still using iPhoto are not automatically recognized by the Faces function of Photos.app…

Is there any way to solve this ?

 

Answer :

Yes, there is, but it’s not as easy as you might have hoped…

There are 2 sides to your question, so let’s answer both separately :

  1. How to find people in pictures imported from iPhoto ?
  2. How to get people from iPhoto pictures into Photos.app Faces database ?

HOW TO FIND PEOPLE IN PICTURES IMPORTED FROM iPHOTO ?

When you import an iPhoto database into Photos.app the faces you had tagged way back then are not recognized as Faces, but as Keywords… so the easiest way to find pictures of  these people is this :

  • open Photos.app
  • click on “Photos” in the list on the left (the top option, in the Library chapter)
  • then click on the “Showing: All Items”-button (top right, just below the “Search” field)
  • from the pulldown menu, select “Keyword Manager”
  • in the separate “Keywords”-window that pops up, in the bottom part, named “Keywords” you will find labels with all the names of the people you had tagged in Faces of iPhoto
  • select the label of the person you were looking for (don’t mind that the label is greyed out, in this situation they are still selectable) and drag&drop it into the top part, named “Quick Group”
  • then click on the red button top left to close the “Keywords”-window
  • now, back in the main view of Photos.app, click on the “Showing: All Items”-button (again…)
  • from the pulldown menu, select the name of that particular person at “Show Only Keywords”
  • now, you will only see pictures with this particular person you where looking for
  • scroll through the photos and find the pictures you were looking for
  • remember to put the “Showing Only: …”-button back to “Showing: All Items” before you quit Photos.app

HOW TO  GET PEOPLE FROM iPHOTO PICTURES INTO PHOTOS.APP FACES DATABASE ?

After you have created keywords for people you were searching for in Photos.app, you can start to get them into the Faces database of Photos.app… to do that, do this :

  • make sure that the button top right is labeled “Showing Only:…” (in which the dots are substituted by the person’s name)
  • now, dubble-click on a photo that the person is in
  • the photo will enlarge and all faces that are recognized as faces will have a circle around them with a label below them saying “unnamed”
  • if the face of the person you had in mind does have a unnamed-label, click on the label and substitute the “unnamed” by typing the person’s real name over it
  • if the face of the person you had in mind did not get a label automatically, you will have to add it by hand… to do so, do this :
    • click on the “info ( encircled i )”-button top right
    • in the popup window that opens, click on the “plus ( encircled + )”-button
      • make sure that you do this when the name tags are visible in the photo, else it will have no effect
      • if the name tags aren’t displayed, click anywhere on the picture and they will reappear
    • when you click the “plus”-button, a circle wit ha name tag labeled “Click to Name” will appear in the middle of the picture
    • drag this circle over to the face of the person you would like to tag
      • if the circle is too big or too small, you can adjust its size by moving the dot on the right side of the circle
      • if for some reason you want to delete the circle, click on the X-sign on the left edge of the circle
    • then click on “Click to Name” and typ the name of the person whose face is in the circle
    • when done with this picture, proceed to the next picture by swiping from right to left
    • when done with tagging, go back by double-clicking anywhere on the picture
      • after that, you can even get out of the selection of this particular person’s photos by going to the “Showing Only:…”-button and changing it into “All Items” (so the button will say “Showing: All Items”)

Yes, it a painstakingly labor-intensive job to put all those name tage back in to each and every old picture, but you will have to do this for a lot of old pictures before Photo.app’s own Faces function will start to recognise and label people in those old pictures automatically…

fixed : new iPhone photos not showing up in macOS Photos.app

Question :

I am trying to get my photos from my iPhone onto my Mac. But after connecting my iPhone using USB the Photos.app does start up in macOS, but the newest photos I’ve made with my iPhone never show up my Mac.

Disconnecting and reconnecting my iPhone doesn’t help. Restarting the iPhone doesn’t resolve this problem, neither does restarting my Mac.

What can I do to solve this ?

 

Answer :

Even though you are encountering a very annoying problem, it’s rather easy to solve :

  • disconnect your iPhone (or iPad) from your Mac
  • open the Photos.app in iOS (on your iPhone/iPad)
  • click on the Photos-button (bottom-left ; the icon consisting of a double rectangle with the text ‘Photos’ below it)
  • select one photo one of the newest photos
  • then click on the Share-button (bottom-left ; the icon consisting of a square with an arrow pointing upward)
  • select all photos that are not showing up on you Mac, by swiping the photos to the left and right and tapping the bottom-right circle of each individual missing photo (the circle will turn into a blue checkmark)
  • then swipe in the row of app-icons to the Shared Albums icon and click it
  • wait while the clock says ‘Preparing’
  • then click Cancel (top-left)
  • now connect your iPhone (or iPad) to your Mac
  • open the Photos.app in macOS (on your Mac)
  • unlock your iPhone (or iPad) using your fingerprint/face-scan/screen-unlock-code
  • then, on your Mac, in Photos.app goto the left side bar and at Devices, click on your iPhone/iPad
  • then wait for the photos to appear as New Items
  • and click on the Import All New Items button top-right (or select only the photos you want to import and click on the Import Selected button)

That’s it !

fixed : get new iPhone’s photos on old Snow Leopard OSX10.6.8-Mac

UPDATE : the procedure outlined in this post still works for new iPhones with iOS11 and iOS12 (like the iPhone 7, 8, X, XS and XR) even though it was originally written for new iPhones running iOS10 (like the iPhone 6 and 6s)

Question :

I just got a new iPhone 7, and now I want to transfer my photos from my previous iPhone 6 onto my MacBook. I was hoping to use iCloud for this, but my MacBook is rather old and can’t run any version of OSX newer than MacOSX 10.6.8 “Snow Leopard” which doesn’t have iCloud installed, just it’s predecessor MobileMe…

What can I do ?

 

Answer :

Theoretically, you could also go online from your Mac and get access to your photos through the iCloud.com website… but since the latest versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox don’t support MacOSX 10.6.8 any longer (Opera does for now, but that’s about to change also), this route is not a future-proof solution.

The most future-proof solution is using a USB-connection like this :

  • on your Mac, open the Applications-folder and open the Image Capture app
  • now connect your iPhone to your Mac using a USB-cable
  • you will get this error message [ Photos in the Camera Roll on “…” cannot be viewed or imported because the iPhone is locked with a passcode”
  • click on OK
  • then unlock your iPhone with your fingerprint (or type your 6-digit unlock code)
  • on the iPhone you will get this message [ Trust this computer? ]
  • click on Trust
  • then in Image Capture, under Devices, click on iPhone
  • now all the photos on your iPhone will be listed and/or displayed on your Mac
  • from the pulldown list at “Import to:” select a folder to import the photos to (the default folder is your Pictures-folder, but you can also choose iPhoto or create a new folder at “Other…”)
  • then select the individual photos you want to import and click on Import, or click on Import All to import all your iPhone’s photos onto your Mac
  • then wait…

fixed : export contacts database from AddressBook to Excel

Question [1] : I’m new to Mac, I just switched to my first Mac, before I only used Windows PCs. How can I import my contacts from my Windows PC into my new Mac running OSX ?

Question [2] : I’m a Mac user myself, but I need to share my contacts database from Apple AddressBook with WindowsPC-users I’m working with. Since there is no Apple AddressBook for Windows, this seems impossible. What can I do ?

Answer to both [1] and [2] : It’s possible, and it isn’t that complicated either.

There are (free) MacOSX-applications that can do this for you.

! BEWARE ! there are 2 applications around that are extremely similar (and therefore easily confused) both in name and features :

Address Book Exporter 2.1.2 (from 2003 ; with a space in the name)

The first one (from 2003 ; with a space in the name) is the best one. That’s the one that still works properly with Apple AddressBook from MacOSX 10.6 “Snow Leopard”.

How to install :

  • download the application (from 2003 ; with the space in the name)

  • drag the application-icon to your Applications folder

How to use it :

  • startup the application “Address Book Exporter 2.1.2”
  • from the “Groups” list, choose “All” to start converting your entire AddressBook, or choose only the selection that you want to export
  • if you would like to convert / export a selection that is not listed, go back into your AddressBook and create a (temporary) group from your selection
  • now, in “Address Book Exporter 2.1.2” check the checkbox of “Export using current field settings”
  • click the “Configure Settings” button
  • in the pull-down menu that appears, check the checkboxes of everything that you would like to export, and click “OK”
  • click the “Export Address Book” button
  • if you like, you can change the name of the exported file
  • then choose a destination on your Mac where you will be able to easily find the exported file (e.g. “Desktop”) and click “Save”
  • quit “Address Book Exporter”
  • open “MS Excel”
  • drag the icon of the exported file (from the Desktop) onto the MS Excel icon in the Dock, to have it opened in Excel
  • and… here you are : all your contacts are in Excel now
  • from there you can “Save As” to have a .xls-file that you can share with WindowsPC-users

fixed : import contacts database from Excel into AddressBook

A common question of Windows-to-Mac-switchers is “How can I import my contacts from Excel into my Mac ?”.

Here’s the way to import a contacts database from Excel (Mac or Windows) into Apple AddressBook :

  1. open the contacts database in Excel (on Mac or Windows)
  2. save the contacts database under a new name (e.g. “addresses-export.xls”), to make sure you will have a emergency-backup
  3. rearrange the data in the (copy of the) contacts database in such a way that the upper row will only contain column headers, and every next line will only contain the data of one contact (with all data in the correct column)
  4. for street addresses you will need 4 (or 5) separate columns : “street name (including home number)”, “postal code”, “town”(, “province”) and “country” ; if you want to include both a home and a work address, you should make that 2x 4 = 8 columns
  5. make sure to use separate columns to match the different data groups you have, so make separate columns for “home phone”, “work phone”, “mobile phone”, “home fax”, “work fax”, etc.
  6. if you have completely rearranged the data to suit this layout, go to “Save As”
  7. choose the option “Format : Comma Separated Values (.csv)”, choose an easily accessible location to save the file (e.g. on your Desktop) and click “Save”
  8. quit Excel
  9. open Apple AddressBook
  10. click on the ‘button with the plus sign’ in the lower left corner to create a new group and choose a proper group name for the addresses you are about to import (e.g. “Excel import January 1st”)
  11. then, in the upper menu bar under “File”, choose “import”
  12. select “”addresses-export.csv” (or whatever you’ve clued your database file) from the Desktop (or other location where you’ve saved it) and click “Open”
  13. you will now get a “Text File Import” window, in which you have to indicate what the  right name of each ‘column’ should become in Apple AddressBook
  14. for addresses you will have do this in a way that might not be obvious : first select “Address (home)” or “Address (work)” next to the “Address”-heading from your Excel-file, after that an the list will automatically extend to include “PostalCode”, “City” and “Country” (note that this will leave an extra “PostalCode” and “City” just below, that you have to change to the “Do not import” label.
  15. If you’re done setting this up, double-check it again (if you don’t set this up properly and faultless, the outcome will not be acceptable, and you will have to redo the complete import-procedure)
  16. make sure that the little checkbox is checked next to “Ignore first card” and click “OK”
  17. if you will now look in the “Last Import” group (the green group) you will see all imported data
  18. now, just to be sure : double-check some data to make sure everything has been imported the way you want it
  19. then select only one contact from the “Last Import” group and press the CMD+A (“Select All”) to select all contacts and then drag the entire selection onto the group that you’ve previously created, named “Excel import January 1st” or what you’ve called it
  20. Note : the “Last Import” group is only a temporary group, so to make sure you will be able to easily find your Excel-imported contacts as a group in the future, the group “Excel import January 1st” has been created ; if you decide at any time that there’s no need anymore to be able to access these Excel-imported contacts as a separate group, you can easily delete the group name “Excel import January 1st”, without deleting the contacts themselves from AddressBook

…after following this step-by-step instruction, you will have all your Excel-contacts in AddressBook also !
