fixed : bad audio – is my iPhone broken ? (iOS 10)

Question :

I have a recent iPhone running iOS10, but lately I can’t hear people calling me and they can’t hear me when I phone them. There is a cracking noise which makes it impossible to use my iPhone for calling.

Is my iPhone broken ?

Answer :

Even though we cannot rule out that your iPhone is actually having a broken audio hardware issue on forehand, it’s more likely to be a software problem.

This problem is usually fixed by doing one of these resets ( first, be sure to keep your SIM’s PIN-code at hand as you might need it ) :

reset option #1 :

  • while your iPhone is on, press the physical MENU (on the front screen) and ON/OFF (on top or on the right side) buttons at the same time until the screen goes black and after a few seconds the white Apple-logo reappears
  • wait for your screen to rebuild ; then your iPhone has been reset and you can test if your audio works properly while calling

reset option #2 :

  • while your iPhone is on, press the physical ON/OFF button (on the right side of your iPhone) until the ON/OFF slider appears on screen
  • set the ON/OFF slider to OFF and wait for the screen to go black
  • now turn your iPhone back on by pressing the ON/OFF button and wait for your screen to rebuild ; then your iPhone has been reset and you can test if your audio works properly while calling

usually, that’s it… that’s all you need to fix this…

…but if neither of these resets work for you, your iPhone’s audio hardware is probably broken and you should have your iPhone repaired at an Apple Store or Apple repair-centre.

fixed : quickly clear all personal data from your old iPhone before donating it to your child

Question :

I just got a new iPhone, and now I want my child to have my previous iPhone. However, I want to clean out all my content before giving the iPhone away, so my child can start with a clean new iPhone.

Is there an easy way to do that ?

Answer :

Yes, doing so is rather easy, but it can only be done this simply if you can access the iPhone using the previous owner’s login (to prevent stolen iPhones from being erased before they can be traced).

For a quick ‘clean install’ of your iPhone (or iPad), just do this :

  • login to the iPhone using the previous (or actually still ‘current’) user’s login-pin or fingerscan
  • open the Settings app
  • in the Settings page that opens, scroll down a little and click on General
  • in the General page that opens, scroll down to the bottom an click on Reset
  • in the Reset page that opens, click on “Erase All Content and Settings”
  • now follow all directions given on your iPhone, then wait while it’s being reset
  • finally, the iPhone will reboot and you will have a ‘virgin-like’ iOS

Now, your child can start with a clean iPhone 😉

BEWARE : if you are donating your iPhone to charity or to someone you don’t know too well or to someone your don’t trust 100%, do not use this simple method to clean your iPhone ! as it does not fully protect you from people still being able to get some of your old data from your iPhone… (…and steal your photo’s, credit card info or even identity) ; in that case, hook your iPhone up to a computer and erase it’s memory with multiple overwrites (7 or more overwrites is considered ‘safe’) before doing a new install of iOS ; note that you might need extra software to do so

enjoy !

fixed : where did the “Personal Hotspot”-option go in iOS 10 ?

Question :

I just upgraded the iOS 10 on my iPhone, but now the Personal Hotspot option that I need to connect my MacBook to my iPhone’s mobile internet connection has vanished from my Settings… it used to be listed right below the Mobile Data setting, but now it’s gone…

What is wrong ? Where did it go ?

Answer :

For some unknown reason the update of iOS 10 seems to hide the Personal Hotspot option… it’s still there, but you have to dig a little deeper to get to it now…

Here’s how to get it back :

  • on your iPhone, go to Settings –> Mobile Data –> Personal Hotspot
  • now, if you switch it on there, it will work like before, and it will re-appear in the (first window) of Settings, directly below Mobile Data

It’s that simple, but it surely isn’t obvious…

enjoy !
