software running on Apple Macintosh computers with various versions of the Macintosh Operating System :
System 1.0 – 7.5

OS X 10.8 – 10.11
macOS 10.12 and newer
Today I have upgraded to macOS 13 Ventura. Now the EyeTV 4 (64bit) app no longer works. The app doesn’t open, it seems to crash, because a Report or Ignore “Send to Apple” window opens… I’ve tried downloading the latest version of EyeTv from the Geniatech website, but even after installing that, the only thing that I get after starting the app is the Report or Ignore window…
Is there any way to fix this ?
Answer :
For macOS 13 Ventura, you will need at least build 8528 of the EyeTV 4 app. You can download it from the Geniatech website :
After installation, you might need to go through the setup steps again… here are some tips if you need to do so :
make sure you have your licence number at hand, as you might be asked to enter it anew
make sure you select the proper version of the EyeTV-stick you have [ note : the MyGica DVB-T2 is not listed separately, so make sure to select its hardware-twin, the EyeTV Hybrid T2 ]
make sure you select the right input source : choose DVB-T/T2 if you have an aerial antenna connected, and choose DVB-C PAL BG if you have a coaxial from you cable-TV provider plugged in
For some reason, when I started/opened my Mac today and tried to open an app by clicking on it’s icon in the Dock… nothing happened. The Dock didn’t respond… I couldn’t get any app, folder or file to open by clicking on it’s icon in the Dock…
I found a workaround by opening the search window (by clicking on the magnifier icon top right in the macOS menu bar), then typing the application’s name and starting it from there.
But, I want this fixed… what can I do to get the Dock working properly ?
Answer :
There isn’t a clear reason why the macOS Dock freezes up from time to time… so there is no solution that will work in all cases, but to get the macOS Dock working properly again try these (in this order) :
1 – try upgrading to the most up-to-date version of macOS :
in the macOS Menu Bar, click on the Apple-icon top left
in the pulldown menu that opens, click on “System Preferences” (or “System Settings”)
in the System Preferences window (System Settings window) that opens, click on “Software Update” ( the gear / sprocket icon )
in the Software Update window that opens, see if there are any new updates to macOS available
if there are any, update a.s.a.p. by following the on-screen instructions
if there are none, try the next option
2- try restarting your macOS :
in the macOS Menu Bar, click on the Apple-icon top left
in the pulldown menu that opens, click on “Restart” and follow the on-screen instructions
after your Mac has restarted, check if your macOS Dock works now
it the Dock now works properly ; great ! well done ! enjoy !
if the Dock still doesn’t respond, you can try restarting your Mac by using the “Shut down” option …or try the next option
3- try resetting the Dock using the Terminal.app :
in the macOS Menu Bar, click on the magnifier-icon top right
in the search field that opens, type “terminal”
click on the Terminal.app in the list that appears
in the Terminal window that opens, don’t be distracted by the info displayed, just type the following :
killall Dock
then press Return
most of the time it only takes a flash of a second to rested the Dock, sometimes it takes a few moments
now quit the Termini.app
then click on any app icon in the Dock to see if it starts up and the Dock behaves as expected
if it does ; great ! well done ! enjoy !
chances this doesn’t work are very, very low… so if this didn’t work, redo the reset of the Dock using the Terminal.app again before trying your last options : keep using a work-around (as mentioned above) until Apple releases a macOS upgrade …or reinstalling macOS on your Mac.
I have been abroad for some weeks and was using my MacBook and Hotmail-account there, and when I returned home, I could no longer connect to my Hotmail-account from macOS Mail-app… also, in my recovery/alternate eMail-address, I have gotten a warning eMail form the Microsoft account team that reads :
Microsoft account
Verify your account
We detected something unusual about a recent sign-in for the Microsoft account [your Hotmail address]. For example, you might be signing in from a new location, device, or app.
To help keep you safe, we’ve blocked access to your inbox, contacts list, and calendar for that sign-in. Please review your recent activity and we’ll help you secure your account. To regain access, you’ll need to confirm that the recent activity was yours.
[blue button reading “Review recent activity”]
Thanks,
The Microsoft account team
When I click the blue button to verify my Hotmail-account, everything seems to go okay, but when I tried to access my Hotmail-mailbox using the macOS Mail-app, I got an error message that the connection could not be made…
What can I do to fix this ?
Answer :
For some reason your Hotmail-account settings in macOS have been messed up.
To fix this, do this :
open Mail-app
click on “Mail” (top-left, next to the Apple icon in the macOS menu bar) and in the pulldown menu that appears, click on “Preferences”
in the window that opens, click on the Accounts-tab (in-between the “General” and “Junk Mail” tabs)
NOTE : do NOT click on “Accounts” in the Mail-app pulldown menu !! …as clicking on “Accounts” from the Mail-app pulldown menu will take you to the “Internet Accounts” settings in System Preferences, and NOT to the Account settings in the Mail-app !! …the two are not the same !!
the window will now be names “Accounts” and show a list of your eMail-accounts on the left
in the list on the left, click on your Hotmail-account
then, click on the “Server Settings” tab, and correct your settings to this :
Incoming Mail server (IMAP)
User Name: [your Hotmail address]
Password: [your Hotmail password]
Host Name: map-mail.outlook.com
[put checkmark in checkbox] Automatically manage connection settings
I had to do a small retouch on an JPEG-image that is on my Mac, but my AdobeCS-licence is out-fo-date (and I don’t want to renew it until I need to do more tan one hour of work with it) so I can’t use Photoshop CS as I would usually do.
Then I remembered that I have the FREE Adobe PS Express-app installed on my iPad that should be able to do the trick. I figured out a way to get the JPEG-image to open using iCloud, but when I try to save the end result, the image is not saved in iCloud…
How do I get the edited JPEG back onto my Mac ?
Answer :
To open the JPEG-image that is on your Mac in PS Express-app on your iPad, do this :
first, on your Mac, make sure that the image is saved on your Desktop (or another easily accessible folder that is being synced across your devices using your iCloud-account)
then, on your iPad, open the Files-app and got iCloud Drive > Desktop (or the folder where the JPEG-image is in)
now click on the JPEG-image and it will open in a preview window
there, click on the Export-button top-right [the square with the upward pointing arrow]
in the pulldown-menu you will not see what you are looking for straight away, so scroll down and click on “PS Express”
now the JPEG-image will open in the PS Express-app and you can edit it
After editing, export the image back onto your Mac doing this :
make sure you have the finished the image open in PS Express-app on your iPAd
now, click on the Export-button top-right [the square with the upward pointing arrow]
in the window that opens, you will not see what you are looking for straight away, so scroll all the way down and click on More [the three dot icon]
now, in the popup menu that opens, scroll down and click on “Save to Files”
in the new pop-up that opens, typ the name you want to give the JPEG-image over the random name that was automatically generated (to by-pass potential naming conflicts, give it a slightly different name than the original image)
then, in the list of iCloud Drive folders, select Desktop (or the specific folder that you want to save the finished image to)
then check that it says “Item will be saved to “Desktop” on iCloud Drive.” and click Save [top-right]
then go back to your Mac, and you will see the edited JPEG-image there
Question : I am using WhatsApp to communicate with some people that I have only seen a few times in real life. But as we are communicating in a WhatsApp Group it is really handy to see their profile pictures to remember who is who. But now I need to eMail them and it would be great to distinguish them by their profile pictures also… Is there any way to copy their WhatsApp profile pictures over to my macOS Contacts address book ? I’ve tried dark&drop, but that doesn’t work…
Answer :
Yes, but it’s slightly more time-consuming than drag&drop. Here’s how to :
make sure you have the official WhatsApp Desktop-app installed on your Mac
make sure the WhatsApp Desktop-app is open and you are logged in
note : you will need your mobile phone to log in (for the first time)
in the WhatsApp Desktop-app do this :
open an old conversation with the person who’s profile picture you need
you can use the Search-option to find this person if you don’t see them in your recent chats immediately
in the person’s profile picture that is visible in the middel of the top menu bar
when the Contact Info window opens, right-click on the (large) profile picture that is displayed
now, click on the “Copy Image” text that appears
then, exit WhatsApp Desktop-app and open Preview.app
make sure that “Preview” is listed in the macOS top menu bar, next to the Apple logo
goto “File” > “New From Clipboard” and click on it
if “New From Clipboard” is greyed out, there is nothing on your clipboard, so you should go back into WhatsApp Desktop-app and do the “Copy Image” procedure again
now the profile picture will be displayed as a Preview document
goto “File” > “Save” and click on it
when asked, you can just leave “name: Untitled” and “location: Desktop” and click OK
now a new file (icon) named “Untitled” will appear on your Desktop
then, exit Preview.app and open Contacts.app
in Contacts.app find the person you want to add the profile picture to
click on the person’s name to open their personal info
then, drag&drop the “Untitled” file from your Desktop to their profile picture area
frist, in white, the word “edit” will appear, when the Plus-sign appears, drop the file
you can do this even if you don’t click on the “Edit” button bottom right
you will get the option to size the profile picture, so you can zoom in if you like
I have macOS 10.15 Catalina and Mail.app 13.4 and for some reason, I am now getting an error saying that Mail.app can’t get new mail from my Planet.nl eMail account, even though it used to run without any problem for the past years (I had been using the mailserver setting outlined in this post without running into any problems).
I have tried creating a new eMail account for my Planet.nl-account in Mail.app, but that wasn’t possible without deleting the previously used Planet.nl-account from Mail.app first. But even after deleting the previous Planet.nl-account, whenever I try to setup a new eMail account for my Planet.nl-account, it is automatically set up as a POP3-mailbox and I can’t find any way to change it to an IMAP-mailbox afterwards…
Even though it works as a POP3-mailbox, I don’t want a POP3-mailbox since I want to use it on multiple devices constantly : I want to use it on my Mac, my iPhone and my iPad without running into syncing problems.
How do I setup my Planet.nl-account as an IMAP-mailbox on Mail.app ?
Answer :
The problem you are running into seems to have to do with the fact that it’s a long long time ago (actually in the summer of 2008, so nearly 15 years ago) that internetprovider Planet.nl was integrated into (or ‘replaced by’ if you prefer) it’s mother-brand internetprovider KPN, which meant that all Planet.nl mail-servers were replaced by KPNmail.nl mail-servers.
then, open Mail.app on your Mac to delete the existing Planet.nl eMail-account
goto Mail (in the top menu bar) > Prefereces > Accounts (tab) > select the Planet.nl account (from the list on the left) > – (the button with a minus-sign ; a.k.a. ‘delete’)
then goto Apple-icon (top-left in upper menu bar) > System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Add Other Account (bottom option on the right)
now, in the window that opens, DO NOT type username@planet.nl as the new eMail address, but use username@kpnmail.nl instead !!! (even if you have never used username@kpnmail as your eMail address, it is available for you if you have a username@planet.nl eMail address)
now you will get an error message AND the option to manually choose either POP or IMAP
at ‘E-mailadres:’ put username@planet.nl (= the Planet.nl eMail address you want to use)
at ‘Gebruikersnaam:’ put accountname@planet.n (= the Planet.nl account that usually consists of your last name and 3 numbers ; do not forget to add @planet.nl after it)
at ‘Wachtwoord:” put your password (the one that works for KPN Webmail)
at ‘Type account:’ choose IMAP
at ‘Server inkomende e-mail:’ put imap.kpnmail.nl
at ‘Server uitgaande e-mail:’ put smtp.kpnmail.nl
then click the ‘Log in’-button
Then open Mail.app and see that your Planet.nl eMail-account has been added and that your mail is being fetched
I usually work in Apple’s Pages.app to do my text editing, but now someone sent me a school document that was made in MS Word. It opens just fine in Word for Mac, but when I want to print, I can’t find the “Two-sided printing” option…
How can I do Two-sided printing in Word for Mac ?
Answer :
As always, the solution is simple, you just have to know where to look and what to look for…
…anyway, here’s how-to do this in Word 16 (2021) :
Note : in older versions it is similar, but sometimes slightly different (just one of those things to know is that “Two-sided printing” is called “Duplex printing” on Windows and therefore also in older versions of MS Office for Mac…)
open the document in Word for Mac
press the [CMD] + [P] key combo on your keyboard to open the Print window ( or goto Word > File > Print )
click on “Copies & Pages” and choose “Layout” from the pulldown menu
in the Layout settings view, see that “Two-Sided” is listed, with the option to choose “Long Edge Binding” (for portrait mode documents) and “Short Edge Binding” (for landscape mode documents)
> note that if “Two-Sided” is not listed here, your printer doesn’t have the option to print two-sided automatically, and you will have to do the two-sided printing manually [see below]
That’s it !
If your printer can’t do two-sided printing automatically, you can do this to get two-sided printing manually :
open the document in Word for Mac
press the [CMD] + [P] key combo on your keyboard to open the Print window ( or goto Word > File > Print )
click on “Copies & Pages” and choose “Microsoft Word” from the pulldown menu
in the Microsoft Word settings view, set “Print:” to “Even pages only”
then go back to “Copies & Pages” and at “Pages:” set both “From:” and “To:” to 1 and click the Print button
when your print is ready, draw a huge arrow on the back of the printed page pointing upward like the text on the front side
then put the page in the printer’s feeder drawer and make sure the arrow you have drawn on it is on the upside and pointing into the printer drawer and close the printer drawer
then click on “Copies & Pages” and choose “Microsoft Word” from the pulldown menu
in the Microsoft Word settings view, set “Print:” to “Even pages only”
then go back to “Copies & Pages” and at “Pages:” set both “From:” and “To:” to 1 and click the Print button
now look at the printed page that comes out and figure out how to put the pages in after having them printed on one side (make sure you have this correct before proceeding ; if you can’t get your head around this, just redo the above steps and print a new testpage)
now, get ready to print the entire document :
press the [CMD] + [P] key combo on your keyboard to open the Print window ( or goto Word > File > Print )
click on “Copies & Pages” and choose “Microsoft Word” from the pulldown menu
in the Microsoft Word settings view, set “Print:” to “Even pages only”
then go back to “Copies & Pages” and at “Pages:” select “All”
then wait for all even pages to print
when done, flip over the bulk of printed paper the way you figured out to be right (using your test page as a reference) and put it back in the printing drawer
make sure that not only the orientation is correct, but that the first page is on top and the last page is at the bottom also
click on “Copies & Pages” and choose “Microsoft Word” from the pulldown menu
in the Microsoft Word settings view, set “Print:” to “Odd pages only”
then go back to “Copies & Pages” and at “Pages:” select “All”
then wait for all odd pages to print
…now check if your document is printed correctly on both sides !
if not… you have gotten your page flipping incorrect… too bad… you’ll have to redo from start…
