fixed : Adobe Application Manager hangs during updates

Question :

Running one of my Adobe applications (Photoshop), I was checking for updates from within the application. I found the “Updates…” option under “Help”, and when I clicked it, the Adobe Application Manager application started up and informed me that there were some updates available, so I indicated to update right away.

The update process started right away, with downloading the updates. But then, after a while, I noticed that there was no progression in the progress bar and the estimated update time was about 4 hours… nothing seemed to be happening… the application seemed to hang…

What can I do ?

Answer :

For some reason the Adobe Application Manger app seems to hang quite often. This might for instance occur if the screensaver starts because there’s ‘no human activity’ during the upgrade process…

The solution is rather simple, and basically comes down to just quitting and restarting the Adobe Application Manager app. Here’s how to :

– if the Adobe Application Manager hangs, press the CMD + ALT + ESC key-combo on your keyboard to bring up the “Force Quit”-window

– then try to quit each open app using the built-in regular Quit-option (CMD + Q key-combo), and force quit any app that will not quit normally using the “Force Quit”-window

– preferably you should now startup Disk Utility and run the “Repair Disk Permissions” action on your internal Hard Drive

-then go to Applications –> Utilities –> Adobe Application Manager –> core –> Adobe  Application Manager

– double-click to run the app and try to upgrade again

– when the upgrade hangs again, just ‘Force Quit’ the Adobe Application Manager again and restart it to try again

– finally you will get a message that the upgrade has succeeded

That’s it !

Enjoy !

fixed : replace corrupted icon in ABBYY FineReader

Question :

I have the ORC Scan-to-Document converter software ABBYY FineReader. It works great, but there’s just one really annoying thing : the desktop icon is fine in smaller sizes, but whenever it needs to display in bigger sizes, it gets all scrambled up…

What is wrong ?

Answer :

The icon that is connected to your application seems to have corrupted images for the bigger (newer) icon sizes.

I haven’t been able to find big sized (512×512 and 1024×1024) icons for you, but these PNG-files will help you to quickly create new icons for ABBYY FineReader that will look good at most sizes :

ABBYY FineReader Express 8 (icon 175x175) for ABBYY FineReader Express 8

ABBYY Finereader 9 (icon 256x256) for ABBYY FineReader 9

ABBYY FineReader 11 (icon 256x256) for ABBYY FineReader 11

ABBYY FineReader OCR Pro 12 (icon 175x175) for ABBYY FineReader OCR Pro 12

Here’s how to convert these into icons :

– download the icon you need (just drag&drop from this website to your Desktop)

– double-click the PNG-file on your Desktop (it will open in Preview)

– press the CMD + A key-combo on your keyboard to select the image

– press the CMD + C key-combo to copy the image

– select the “ABBYY FineReader”-app in your “Applications”-folder

– press the CMD + I key-combo to open the “Get Info”-window

– select the icon (a blue corona will appear around the icon)

– press the CMD + V key-icon to paste the image into the app-icon

– press the CMD + ALT + ESC key-combo to open the “Force Quit”-window

– select “Finder” from the list and click the “Relaunch”-button

– then close the Force Quit and Get Info windows

…that’s it

enjoy !

tip : quickly cut-out part of a picture in OSX

Question :

I have a nice picture I want to use in a presentation, but I don’t want the entire picture, just part of it.

Is there an easy way to cut the desired piece out ?

…even if I don’t have Photoshop ?

Answer :

Even if you don’t have Photoshop, cutting out part of a picture for (re)use in PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Pages, your website, LinkedIn, FaceBook, etc. is very easy on your Mac :

1- open the picture in Preview app (usually that would only require you to double-click on the picture’s icon)

2- click on the Image-button (Edit button)

3- in the Editing-toolbar that appears, click on the Image-button (Selection button)

4- now the + (Plus sign) appears, so : click on one corner of the part of the picture you want to select and drag to the opposite corner [ you can do this rather ‘roughly’ ]

5- then the selection area appears [ normally a rectangle with dots in the corners and on the middle of the side ] ; drag the dots so, that the selection area exactly fits the part of the picture that you want to take out

6- then press the ‘Copy key-combo’ (CMD + C)

7- now choose “New From Clipboard” from the “File”-menu, or press the ‘New key-combo’ (CMD + N), and you will get a new window with only your ‘cut-out part’ in it

8- if that looks as you envisioned it, choose “Save” from the “File”-menu, or press the ‘Save key-combo’ (CMD + S), and save the cut-out picture as a JPEG or PNG (or TIFF)

info : is the FREE Time Tracker app compatible with OSX 10.9 Mavericks ?

Question :

I am a freelancer, and therefore I need a time tracking-app. I have been using the FREE “Time Tracker”-app (that was originally made by Ivan Dramaliev in 2005) for some years now to great joy. I am now on the verge of upgrading to OSX 10.9 Mavericks, but I’ve heard that this upgrade will turn old software from the PowerPC-Mac era obsolete…

I’ve looked on the internet, but I can’t find any info on this :

is Time Tracker app compatible with OSX 10.9 Mavericks ?

Answer :

YES !

Time Tracker app will run in OSX 10.9 Mavericks

But… there’s a few things you should know :

– no thorough testing has been done on the compatibility with OSX 10.9 Mavericks, so there might still be some minor bugs or incompatibilities… (but generally speaking, you should be able to open your existing Time Tracker files, and create new ones)

– the latest version of the FREE Time Tracker app is version 1.3.13 (beta) and has been released by Rainer Burgstaller in January 2011 (so about 3 years ago), this version can be downloaded from his website or from the project’s GoogleDev-page here

– Rainer has stated that he has ambitions with Time Tracker, but he has little time to work on it… so Time Tracker might not be a good choice if you’re looking for a future-proof solution…

– the built-in Gatekeeper function of OSX will refuse the install of Time Tracker initially, since  it is considered to be from an “unidentified developer”… for instructions on how to bypass this, look here

fixed : use unsupported scanner in OSX 10.9 Mavericks

UPDATE : if you are running OSX 10.10 Yosemite, check out the updated version of this post here

——————————-

Question :

I have a Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 that used to work perfectly in MacOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. But now I’ve bought a new Mac which runs OSX 10.9 Mavericks, I can’t seem to install it, since Canon doesn’t update the drivers anymore.

What can I do ?

Answer :

In OSX 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks, any TWAIN-supporting scanner can be used without any additional software.

A list of supported scanners for OSX 10.9 Mavericks can be found here.

Here’s a quick step-by-step instruction :

– connect your scanner directly to your Mac using a USB-cable

– open the System Preferences

– then click on “Print & Scan”

– then, just below in the list of printers on the left, click on the “+”-sign

– that will bring up the “Add”-window, which enables you to add a new printer or scanner

– if your scanner is TWAIN-supporting, it will show up there, and you just need to select it and click on the “Add”-button

– then it will be listed in the previous (“Print & Scan”) System Preferences window, and if you select it (and you put a piece of paper or a photo in the scanner), a Scanning Preview window will show up, allowing you to scan your document to file or eMail or something else…

but…

…some for some printers, like the Canon CanoScan LiDE 20 and LiDE 30, the TWAIN-drivers are not included in OSX. In that case, you will need to install some generic (FREE) TWAIN-drivers :

– for OSX 10.9 Mavericks, download and install these files (in this same order) and restart your Mac after doing so, then your scanner will also show up in the “Print & Scan” System Preferences :

libusb.pkg.tar.gz

sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz

SANE-Preference-Pane.pkg.tar.gz

TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg.tar.gz

– for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, download and install these files (in this same order) and restart your Mac after doing so, then your scanner will also show up in the “Print & Scan” System Preferences :

libusb.pkg.tar.gz

sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz

SANE-Preference-Pane.pkg.tar.gz

TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg.tar.gz

– for MacOSX 10.7 Lion, download and install these files (in this same order) and restart your Mac after doing so, then your scanner will also show up in the “Print & Scan” System Preferences :

libusb.pkg.tar.gz

sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz

SANE-Preference-Pane.pkg.tar.gz

TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg.tar.gz

– if these files do not turn into regular .pkg-files when you click on them, you need unTAR-software like this :

The Unarchiver

– if you get an error-message telling you you can’t install this software (these drivers) since the are not from Apple-appoved developers, you need to :

– open the System Preferences

– then click on “Security & Privacy”

– then make sure the “General”-tab is selected

– click the padlock in the lower left corner and provide an Administrator name & password to unlock the padlock

– then at “Allow applications downloaded from:” select “Anywhere”

– and exit the System Preferences to make this setting stick

Note #1 :

TWAIN-supporting drivers (like SANE and the ones that come with OSX) will enable you to directly scan from within various applications like Photoshop, MS Word, GraphicConverter, OmniPage and OSX’s built-in Image Capture. [ please also read Note #7 and #8 for more tips on this ! ]

Note #2 :

when using the SANE drivers, you will probably not be able to use the ‘one click’-buttons that are on the scanner itself…

Note #3 :

if your scanner lets you scan the first time, but after shut-down and restart scanning seems impossible because OSX can’t find the scanner, just plug-out the scanner’s USB-cable and plug it back in and everything should work again…

Note #4 :

if the “Scan”-button remains grayed-out, make sure that you have selected an area to scan… (put differently : if “Selection:” is set to “Off”, you will need to select an area to scan before the “Scan”-button will be ready to use…)

Note #5 :

if you get a distorted scan when scanning in landscape view (or any other rotated view), just scan normally in portrait view and rotate the scanned image afterwards (in Preview app or another image editing program, like Photoshop or Graphic Converter)

Note #6 :

if you are not able to scan as a JPEG (.jpg-flie), just scan as a TIFF (.tif-file) and convert the scanned image afterwards (in Preview app or another image editing program, like Photoshop or Graphic Converter)

Note #7 :

if your scanner doesn’t show up in Image Capture (especially in OSX 10.9 Mavericks), use this workaround :

go to System Prefecences –> Printers & Scanners –> [your scanner] –> Scan –> Open Scanner

Note #8 :

if your scanner doesn’t show up in Photoshop (especially in OSX 10.9 Mavericks), try this workaround :

go to Applications –> Adobe Photoshop CS# –> Adobe Photoshop CS# –> type “CMD” + “i” key-combo (on your keyboard) –> (in the Get Info window) select “Open in 32 bit mode” and exit Get Info

then open Adobe Photoshop (CS#-version) –> File –> Import –> SANE

Note #9 :

another option that might just work to get SANE drivers to connect with ImageCapture and Photoshop (especially if you have an older CANON scanner) is (re)installing the TWAINbrigde.app that Jan Egil has ready for download on his website.

If you encounter any problems with these SANE drivers for OSX, try contacting Mattias Ellert directly as indicated here.

If you want to un-install the TWAIN SANE drivers, either use an un-installer application like AppCleaner or follow the instructions for manual un-install as outlined in Mattias Ellert’s FAQ (last question & answer).

fixed : print iOS note to a wireless non-AirPrint printer

Question :

I have some iCloud Notes on my iPhone and I would like to print them on my wireless printer (a Samsung CLP-365W wireless color laserprinter), but it’s not an AirPrint-supported printer…

…how do I do that ?

Answer :

First make sure your wireless printer is set-up for use with iOS (iPhone/iPad).

For instructions to do so with a Samsung CLP-365W, click here.

Then make sure you have the wireless printing app installed that works with your pinter, you will probably be able to find one in the iTunes App Store, either released by the printer manufacturer or a general one that is compatible with your printer.

For use with the Samsung CLP-365W, you will need the Samsung Mobile Print app.

Then follow these steps :

1- open “Notes” on your iPhone/ iPad

2- select the note you want to print

3- when the specific note is opened, double-tap on the screen and choose “Select All” from the popup, then select “Copy”

4- use the Menu-button to go back to the main screen and there, select the Mobile Print app, when it opens, select “Clipboard”

5- then select your wireless printer and click “Print”

…that’s it !

Enjoy !
