fixed : charge and use headphones at the same time on USB-C iPad Pro

Question :

My 2018 iPad Pro is great. I can use it for most of the office work I previously did on my MacBook. I have also started to use my iPad Pro for conference calls. For that I would like to wear my favorite over-ear headphones, which have a 3.5mm mini-jack and noise canceling. I got an official Apple USB-C-to-minijack adapter for that, but then I run into the problem that I cannot charge my iPad Pro at the same time. I have seen that there are various docking stations and port-multipliers that work with the USB-C iPad Pro, but those are very expensive…

Isn’t there a simpler solution ?

 

Answer :

Yes there is, but your choices are very limited : there are various splitters available that split the USB-C port into a USB-port and an audio-port… but : BEWARE ! nearly every single one of them does NOT work with the iPad Pro !!! (most of them only work on Android devices)

There is only one of the simple (and very affordable) splitters that is tested to work with the 2018 iPad Pro :

Note 1 : this splitter’s USB-C port is only capable of charging, not for a USB-(data)stick or a USB-keyboard or anything other than a USB-C charger

Note 2 : this splitter’s audio mini-jack does support both audio-out and audio-in, so when using headphones with a microphone (like gaming headsets) that microphone is used, but when using a regular headphone, the iPad Pro’s built-in microphone will be used

fixed : stream video to Google Nest Hub from iPhone/iPad

Question :

We’ve just gotten ourselves a Google Nest Hub (the Google Home pod with a screen) in our kitchen. Since it has a screen, we would like to watch Netflix and/or live TV on it.

Is that possible ?

 

Answer :

Yes, you can stream video (and live TV) from your iPhone (or iPad) to your Google Nest Hub’s screen as if you were streaming to a Google Chromecast…

But…  even though it uses the Chromecast-isch protocol, the app developers have to add support for streaming to the Google Nest Hub as an extra… most services have already implemented support, but some are still working on it…

International streaming services :

  • Netflix : not yet (for now real Chromecast streaming only)
  • Amazon Prime : not yet (for now real Chromecast streaming only)
  • AppleTV+ : no (no support expected for some time to come as Apple and Google have only recently started to consider more compatibility between Apple’s AirPlay and Google’s Chromecast streaming protocols)
  • Disney+ : yes
  • YouTube : yes
  • Vimeo : yes
  • EyeTV : not yet

Local Dutch streaming services ( video-on-demand/VOD, catch-up TV & live TV ) :

  • ZiggoGo : yes
  • Videoland : yes
  • RTL XL : yes
  • KIJK : yes
  • NOS Play : yes
  • NPO Start : yes
  • Pathé Thuis : yes

To stream video (or live TV) from your iPhone (or iPad) to your Google Nest Home’s screen, the procedure is nearly identical for all services :

  • make sure the Google Nest Hub is ON
  • make sure the Google Nest Hub is on the same WiFi network as your iPhone (or iPad) – you can check this in the GoogleHome.app on your iPhone (or iPad)
  • turn on the streaming video service’s app on your iPhone (or iPad)
  • start the video you would like to stream
  • click on the Chromecast-icon (rectangular icon with the WiFi-sign over the bottom left corner) that is displayed (somewhere on the screen, usually at the bottom, top or side – depending on the app’s layout)
  • from the popup-list select the Google Nest Hub (which you have given a name like “Kitchen Display” in GoogleHome.app)
  • and start watching on your Google Nest Hub

That’s it !

fixed : international YouTube for teenagers on age restricted iPad

Question :

My children have an age-restricted iPad, but ever since Google/YouTube upscaled the age-restriction of the YouTube-app to 17+ in 2015 they can no longer view YouTube video’s on their iPad, not even in Safari.

As they are young teenagers, I would like to enable them to view YouTube videos on their iPad, but I don’t want to upscale their age-restriction to 17+ for a few years.

Is there any way to do this ?

 

Answer :

Since Google (the (step)mother of YouTube) upscaled the age-restriction to 17+ in 2015, they have also introduced the new YouTube Kids-app which has just a 4+ age-restriction.

…however, as Google advertises this as a “made for ages 5 and under”, this is not for teenagers…

on top of that, the YouTube Kids-app is only available in the US iTunes store, even though it’s claimed to be available in most international languages…

…luckily, there are some alternatives for international teenagers :

iOS VideoTube-app

iOS Tubex Video and Music-app

iOS Tubex Free Music and Video Player-app

all three are available internationally and only have a 12+ age-restriction

and even tough both Tubex-apps use the same name, they are entirely different apps made by different developers…

note that none of these are endorsed by either YouTube, Google or Apple, but that doesn’t have to be problematic of course…

fixed : no audio on iPhone, just an annoying beeping noise

Question :

Today the output-sound of my new iPhone 6s turned into complete noise. No matter which app I use, be it YouTube, iTunes Music or online TV, all sound is reduced to an alternating beep-sound. I can turn the volume down (or up), but it doesn’t go away, no matter what I try…

What can I do ?

 

Answer :

Regardless of the exact cause of the error you run into… your best option when encountering weird behavior of your iOS-device (iPhone/iPad) is to do a reset.

For your audio-problem this is tested and proven to work also.

For the iPhone 6s the reset-procedure is a little different from the one used on previous iPhones (*) :

  • make sure you have the PIN-code of your SIM-card at hand
  • press and hold the POWER-button until the screen goes fuzzy and the ‘slide to power off’-slider appears
  • then release the POWER-button and slide the slider to the right to turn the iPhone off
  • wait for the screen to go black
  • then press and hold the POWER-button until the Apple logo (re)appears
  • then release the POWER-button and wait for the screen to go back to normal
  • and when asked, enter the PIN-code to unlock your SIM-card

…that’s it

😉

 

On previous iPhones the reset-procedure is :

  • make sure you have the PIN-code of your SIM-card at hand
  • press and hold the MENU- and POWER-buttons of your iPhone/iPad simultaneously until the entire screen turns black and the Apple logo reappears
  • then release both buttons and wait for the screen to go back to normal
  • and when asked, enter the PIN-code to unlock your SIM-card

…that’s it

fixed : Flash 11 needed on PowerPC Mac (for BBC iPlayer, Facebook video, etc.)

Question :

I was a happy user of BBC iPlayer, but it has stopped working on my G4 (or G5) PowerPC Mac, since the new BBC iPlayer version requires Adobe Flash 11, and the latest version of Flash released is version Player 10.1.102.64

Isn’t there any way for me to view Flash 11 content on my PowerPC Mac ?

Answer :

There is an unofficial version of Flash for PowerPC that tells websites it is Flash 11 to enable you to view Flash 11 content. This works for BBC iPlayer, Facebook video, YouTube video, Adobe Kuler and various other web services.

This will enable you to access Flash 11 content on your PowerPC Mac, but please be aware that modern video will still be stuttering on a G4 Mac… even with this trick… for YouTube viewing you might be better of using MacTubes ; go here for more info : https://macmanusnl.wordpress.com/2012/07/28/fixed-watch-yo…wered-g4-ibook/

Installing the unofficial Flash 11 is rather simple, but as always with ‘home-brewed’ software, using it is completely AT YOUR OWN RISK !

– first and foremost : BACKUP your Mac ; make a copy of your entire hard drive before you proceed (use TimeMachine for instance)

– after that, and ONLY after that backup being done, open Safari and download the edited Flash-plugin here :

–  then goto the download button in the upper right corner of Safari and click it

– then in the “Downloads” windows that opens, click on the folder named “FPforFBPPC”

– when the Finder opens, click on the alias folder named “Internet Plug-Ins” (this folder can also be found at [your hard drive] –> Library –> Internet Plug-Ins)

– inside that folder, right-click (= CTRL + mouse click) on the file named “Flash Player.plugin”

– in the popup menu that appears, choose “Compress Flash Player.plugin”

– you will now have a file named “Flash Player.plugin.zip”, rename it to “Flash Player(original).plugin.zip”

– then right-click on the file named “Flash Player.plugin” and choose “Move to Trash”

– then quit Safari

– then go back to your downloads folder, click on the folder named “FPforFBPPC” once again, and right-click the file “flash Player.plugin” that’s in there

– from the popup menu choose “Label” and a color that indicates to you that this is not an original file (e.g. red or yellow)

– then drag the file “flash Player.plugin” onto the folder alias named “Internet Plug-Ins” that’s right below it

– then click on the file “READ FIRST.rtf” and read the disclaimer that the maker (called SteelBin) has for you !

– now reopen Safari and goto this website :

– there you can check if you see the video (at STEP1) and if your Flash Player Version is recognized as 11.1.102.55 (at STEP2)

– if that’s okay, you’re done (don’t bother about STEP3 and STEP4)

(if you get any older version of Flash listed… repeat the procedure, and if that still doesn’t work, follow the instructions below for installing a web browser for PowerPC Macs that’s still being updated)

– Now you’re able to use BBC iPlayer and many other modern sites once again on you ‘old’ Mac !

Note : even though it is suggested elsewhere on the web to combine the use of the unofficial Flash 11 plugin with the TenFourFox web browser, I would advice to not hack TenFourFox to do so… 

Yes, the big advantage of TenFourFox is that it is the closest you can get to the modern day Firefox, but the flipside is that it has plugins (like Flash and QuickTime) completely disabled for security reasons… they’re waiting for HTML5 to make plugins obsolete…

fixed : watch YouTube on an ‘underpowered’ G4 iBook

Question :

I am (still) using an iBook G4 and I very content with it most of the things I use it for. (Even in this day & age of OSX 10.8 “Mountain Lion” and Intel-Macs, I’m still happily using MacOSX 10.5.8 “Leopard” on a PowerPC-Mac…)

And even though Safari 5.0.6 is still doing great for me for regular web browsing, it chokes on YouTube…

How can I fix this ?

Answer :

The iBook G4’s graphics card performance is rather ‘underpowered’ compared to current Macs…

Just install MacTubes, it’s a FREE dedicated application that will run current YouTube-video’s far more smooth than YouTube.com in Safari :
