Question :

I have always been using Macs, and I am enthusiastic about it. But now my employer wants me to work on a Windows-PC, I have no option…

On my Mac, I am a vivid user of Keynote to make my presentations. But now I, on Windows, I can only make presentations in MS PowerPoint…

PowerPoint can’t handle my home-made presentions made in Keynote.

Isn’t there a solution for that ?

Answer :

Apple has recently introduced iCloud web-based versions of the Apple iWork-suite including Keynote, Pages and Numbers. So now you can work in Keynote through iCloud online.

All you need on your PC is Windows 7 (or newer) and a supported webbrowser : preferably Google Chrome 50 (or newer). Internet Explorer 11 (or newer) is also an option, but then Keynote-transitions and Chinese/Japanese/Korean language are not fully supported.

Then go to icloud.com and login (if you don’t have an account, you can create one for free)

In the web-interface, open Keynote and start working.

If you have ‘iCloud file syncing’ switched on on your Mac at home, you can start working on your Keynote-presentation immediately. If not, you can upload the .key-presentation you want to work on.

Note #1 : the Safari webbrowser can only be used for iCloud online from Mac-computers ; any Mac with OSX 10.9 Mavericks and Safari 9 (or newer) is suited. Safari 7 and 8 are only partially supported.

Note #2 : other webbrowsers are only partially supporting iCloud online on Windows : Google Chrome 35 (or newer), Firefox 27 (or newer) and Microsoft Edge (all versions).

I recently overheard a designer talking enthusiastically about a screen protector or something he had on is iPad Pro, which gave him the feeling as if he was writing on traditional paper when he was actually using his Apple Pencil on his iPad Pro.

Can you tell me what he was talking about ?

fixed : need to replace batteries in new Magic Mouse

Question :

I am using my friends iMac at this moment, and I get a message “Mouse Batteries Very Low – Replace or recharge the batteries soon.”. So I turned this Magic Mouse upside-down and now it turns out that the bottom side is different from my own Magic Mouse… I can’t find the lid to open the Magic Mouse and get the empty batteries out…

What is wrong ?

Answer :

The Magic Mouse you have yourself is a 1st generation Magic Mouse that does have a battery compartment with normal AA-type (rechargeable) batteries in it.

The Magic Mouse you are holding now is a Magic Mouse 2 (2nd generation) that has a rechargeable battery pack built-in. There is no battery compartment you can open, there is no lid. You just have to take out the Lighting cable from the iMac-keyboard (or get a Lightning-cable equipped USB-charger from your iPhone or iPad) and plug it into the small oblong hole in the bottom of the Mighty Mouse 2 and it’ll start recharging.

That’s it.

fixed : budget friendly OBD2 dongle for my car

Question :

My car’s on-board computer system sometimes gives unexplained, rather random, error messages. Up until now, I went to the dealer garage to have my car’s on-board computer system be analyzed and reset. Recently I heard that I could buy an OBD2-dongle myself and read and erase error messages myself. That would be a real time (and money) saver.

Is there any budget-friendly OBD2-dongle that I can use with my iPhone ?

Answer :

Yes there are several OBD2-dongles available that can do the job for you. Just make sure that you keep these things in mind when choosing one :

make sure the OBD2-dongle is compatible with iOS (as some are only compatible with PCs or Android-devices)
make sure the OBD2-dongle’s connection is over Bluetooth LowEnergy a.k.a. BLE (since that’s the only way to be able to connect your iPhone to your regular WiFi-network (internet) and to the OBD2-dongle at the same time)
make sure the OBD2-dongle is based on the original ELM327 chip (most cheap Chinese knock-offs are based on problematic, unreliable clone chips)
make sure the OBD2-dongle is compatible with the software you are planning to use with it (not every OBD2-app connects equally good to every OBD2-dongle & if you need to erase the error messages, most FREE versions won’t do so you will usually need the Pro version)

One of the cheapest reliable OBD2-dongles I’ve found is the TONWON OBDII Pro Bluetooth BLE4.0 for about €26,- ;

buy it on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de

And do not forget to get an accompanying iOS-app :

most interesting for the budget-wary is Car Scanner ELM OBD2 Pro for about €5,50

(or the more expensive OBD Fusion at about €11,- or even the €20,- OBD AutoDoctor that even has an additional Mac-version)

…so buying into this DIY-solution is cheaper than having your car’s on-board computer system reset only once !

fixed : unable to approve children’s iPad app from iPhone

Question :

My children have an iPad with a managed account ; they can’t buy any apps from the iTunes App Store nor can they do any In-App Purchases without my approval ; every time they want to buy something from their iPad, I get a message on my iPhone that I need to approve the purchase.

This normally works without a flaw, but today when my children asked for a new app, I got the approval question message on my iPhone, but when I opened it, the iTunes App store wouldn’t load ; the page stays blank and the wheel keeps on spinning… no matter how many times I try… same thing every time… even restarting my iPhone didn’t help…

What is wrong ?

Answer :

Since the introduction of iOS 11, there’s also a new version of the iTunes App Store as you might have noticed… now this new App Store was made more consumer-friendly as it does no longer show you apps that can’t run on your device.

This ‘consumer-friendliness’ has introduced a flaw (or rather a bug) : on your iPhone you can no longer see iPad-only apps in the App Store… that turns out to be problematic for the approval process : as your iPhone can’t show the app your children want to purchase for their iPad, you can’t approve it…

Until Apple fixes this, the only option is to approve the purchase from your own iPad… (so I sure hope you have one…) or temporarily switch of limitations on your children’s iPad…

NOTE : even approval from iTunes on your Mac isn’t an option, as Apple has stripped the iOS Apps section from the iTunes app recently…

fixed : “Your iCloud Account Settings Are Out Of Date” error in Windows 10 Mail app

Question :

I have installed the iCloud application on my PC running Windows 10, and added my iCloud email-address to Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) without a problem, but now I keep getting an error message saying “Your iCloud Account Settings Are Out Of Date”… when I click on it, I get an option to have this fixed by Windows 10 itself, but then nothing happens… the problem remains, and I am not receiving any eMails in my iCloud mailbox…

I have checked on iCloud.com and my PC is listed as a registered device, and there is no error showing in the iCloud application on Windows either…

What can I do to fix this ?

Answer :

Somewhere during 2017 Apple has changed the security settings of the iCould services : it is now obligatory to enable two-factor-authentication on your iCloud account if you want to connect from any non-Apple device : from now on you will need to generate an application-specific password for Windows Mail.app (or Outlook)…

Here’s how to do that :

setup two-factor-authentication on your iCloud account as outlined here
then, make sure you have the iCloud for Windows application installed on your PC ; if you need to reinstalled it, you can download it here
then, make sure you have the iCloud for Windows application setup properly ; open the iCloud for Windows application and make sure there is a checkmark at “Mail” (and at “Contacts”, “Calendars” and “Tasks” if you want to sync those also)
then, make sure you have added your iCloud mailbox to Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) ; if it’s not listed, add it (again)
then, generate an application specific password as outlined here
then, make sure that you input the application specific password you have just generated as the password for your iCloud mailbox in the Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) Settings

That’s it !

NOTE : do NOT use your regular iCloud-password for Windows Mail.app (or Outlook) any longer, it won’t work.
