fixed : “Your iPad could not be activated”/”Activation server temporarily unavailable”-error

Question :

After my iPad tried to update to iOS 9.3.x last night, I had to re-enter my AppleID and now I’m getting a blank page with only this error message :

“Your iPad could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting your iPadto iTunes to activated it or try again in couple of minutes.”

But even if I wait a couple of minutes or even an hour, and try again, I get stuck with this same message…

How can I fix this ?

 

Answer :

Apple Support has a tutorial on how to fix this, but a lot of times that doesn’t work :

If you can’t activate your iPad 2 (GSM model) after you update to iOS 9.3

If you can’t figure out how to do that, or you’ve tried and it doesn’t work for you, try this :

  • if you have an iPad with a GSM SIM-card installed, make sure you have the SIM’s 4-digit PIN-code at hand, then pop the SIM-card out using a bended paperclip or the official tool that’s comes with every iPhone and every SIM-card enabled iPad
  • then, on your Mac, go to Apple-icon (top-left in the menu bar) –> system Preferences –> iCloud
  • in the window that opens, see what eMail-address is listed under your name ; make sure to remember that eMail-address : this is your iCloud-account name (which might be different from your AppleID or iTunes Store-account name)
  • then click on “Account Details” and type the password that is connected to your iCloud-account name
  • if a new window opens, remember this password and close the window
  • if you get an error message that your password is incorrect, make sure you find the password and try again (you can try several times, but if you get a warning that you have only a limited amount of attempts remaining, stop immediately !! and skip this step)
  • now return to your iPad and do a reset by pressing the Home-button (physical button below the screen) and the Power-button (physical button on the right edge or top edge) simultaneously until the screen goes black and the white Apple logo appears
  • now, proceed though the following screens as you normally would until you are asked to enter your Account Name : there you should enter the eMail-address that is your iCloud-account name and the corresponding password
  • if this works, don’t forget to put the Sim-card back into your iPad and you’re done
  • if you happen to run into the Activation Server error page again before you get to the page where you should enter your Account Name, do this :
    • open the AppStore-app on your Mac
    • make sure you have installed all official Apple updates (especially iTunes)
    • connect your iPad directly (so without USB-hubs) to your Mac using the iPad-to-USB-cable
    • on your Mac, open iTunes
    • then do the reset on you iPad agian, simultaneously pressing the Home- and Power-buttons until the Apple logo appears
    • now iTunes (on your Mac) should detect your iPad
    • if it doesn’t, try the reset again
    • if it does, see if you can go trough all setup screen on your iPad
    • if you are unable to do so, go to iTunes on your Mac
    • if a message appears you need to unlock your iPad, type the screen unlock code on your iPad
    • if a “Trust this iPad ?” message appears on your Mac, click “Trust”
    • if a “Trust this Mac ?” message appears on your iPad, click “Trust”
    • now you see a small button with an iPad on it next to the Music/Films/etc.-pulldown menu ; click on it
    • in the next window, you should now be able to initiate the iOS-update of your iPad from your computer
    • then wait for the update to complete
  • afterwards, do not forget to put the SIM-card back into your iPad

fixed : old hard reset procedure doesn’t work on new iPhones with finger scan

Question :

I just encountered an error (or bug) in iOS forcing me to do a hard reset on my iPhone, but when I try the good-old reset-procedure by pressing both the MENU- and POWER-button simultaneously, there’s no reset… just a click-sound and a screenshot photo being taken…

What’s going on ?

 

Answer :

For all iPhones (and iPads) that still have the MENU-button (*) without fingerscan [ so all iPhones up until and including the iPhone 5 and 5c ], the procedure for a hard reset is :

  • make sure you have the PIN-code of your SIM-card at hand
  • press and hold the MENU- and POWER-buttons (*) of your iPhone/iPad simultaneously until the entire screen turns black and the Apple logo reappears
  • then release both buttons and wait for the screen to go back to normal
  • and when asked, enter the PIN-code to unlock your SIM-card

…that’s it

For all iPhones that have the new fingerscanning MENU-button (*) [ so all iPhones starting from the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 and newer ], the above procedure does no longer work, so there is a new procedure for a hard reset :

  • make sure you have the PIN-code of your SIM-card at hand
  • press and hold the POWER-button (*) until the screen goes fuzzy and the ‘slide to power off’-slider appears
  • then release the POWER-button and slide the slider to the right to turn the iPhone off
  • wait for the screen to go black
  • then press and hold the POWER-button until the Apple logo (re)appears
  • then release the POWER-button and wait for the screen to go back to normal
  • and when asked, enter the PIN-code to unlock your SIM-card

UPDATE : since iOS 9.3 the ‘old’ procedure for a hard reset was re-introduced as an extra for the newer fingerscanning iPhones, so these can now also be reset by simultaneously pressing & holding the MENU- and POWER-buttons

(*) the MENU-button is the button that is on the front side of your iPhone or iPad just below the screen :

  • on iPhones up until the iPhone 5 and 5c, the MENU-button has a ’rounded square’ icon on it
  • on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and newer, the MENU-button has no printing on it, but it has an (invisible) fingerscanning-sensor inside

…the POWER-button is the button that is used to turn the iPhone/iPad screen ON and OFF :

  • on iPhones up until the iPhone 5c and 5s, the POWER-button is on the top-side of the iPhone (just like it is on iPads)
  • on iPhone 6 and newer, the POWER-button is on the right-side of the iPhone

fixed : iPad randomly activates auto-sleep

Question :

I have an iPad running iOS6 and for protection I have a sleeve with a cover. To extend battery-life I’ve activated the magnet-triggered ‘auto-sleep’. This used to work great, but now, for some reason, the iPad turns into auto-sleep mode while I’m in the middle of using it…

so, suddenly I hear ‘CLICK’ and then the screen is black…

…what can i do ?

Answer :

This turns out to be a software-bug (probably only in iOS6).

There are 3 ways of coping with this bug :

1- upgrade to iOS7 (the easiest option)

2- shut-off ‘auto-sleep-on-cover-close’ (effective, but also killing the entire enjoyment of the feature…) ; to do so : in the “Settings”-app, go to “General”, then in the chapter that includes Auto-Lock, Passcode Lock and Restrictions, switch the slider at “Lock/Unlock”

3- to a completely fresh install of iOS6 on your iPad (complicated, and unnecessary if you are ever going to upgrade to iOS7) ; to do so you should first backup your iPad (make sure to make an extra copy of all documents and photo’s to a Mac/PC, iCloud or DropBox) and then erase and re-install your iPad. Normally the procedure would be like this :

– connect your iPad to your Mac/PC using a USB-cable and start-up iTunes

– in iTunes, click the button with the name of your iPad on it

– in the window that opens, make sure the “Summary”-tab/page is selected, and in the “Backups” chapter, choose “This computer” and click the “Back Up Now”-button

– when the backup is complete, look at that same window/page, and click on the “Check for Update”-button

– when that check is complete, click on the “Restore iPad”-button and follow the on-screen instructions

– when done, first set up your iPad as a new one

– then, when the setup is complete, (re-)connect your iPad to your Mac/PC and in the “Backups”-chapter, click on the “Restore Backup”-button and follow the on-screen instructions

…now, your problem/bug should be resolved.

fixed : broken-off audio plug stuck in iPad 2

Question :

Today, my son was using our iPad 2 with his headphones on, and when he tried to pull out the plug, it broke…

Now half of the broken 3.5mm audio plug is stuck inside the audio-port of the iPad. It’s so deep inside, I can’t see a way to grasp it with a pair of tweezers and get it out…

What can I do ?

Answer :

Normally, I would say : “take your iPad to an Apple Store and have them get it out”. That’s the way Apple would want you to handle this…

…but if you make sure you’ll be very gentle not to scratch the iPad, you might give it a try yourself ( AT YOUR OWN RISK !! ) :

– first make sure that what you see stuck inside the 3.5mm audio port looks ‘ringed’ ; meaning a (copper-colored) round core, with a (black) plastic tube around it and a very thin (chrome-colored) shell around that

– then get a thick needle (a really thick one, or a safety pin ; it’s important that it will not bend or break and has a very thin and pointy end)

– put the point of the needle on the (black) plastic tube of the broken-off audio plug and very gently push it outwards, onto the (chrome-colored) shell

– if you do so in al directions very gently, the (chrome-colored) shell will come loose and will fall out if you turn the iPad upside down

– after you’ve accomplished that, get a very tiny flat-headed screwdriver (of less than 3mm width), and push it down very gently in-between the side of the audio-jack and what is left of the audio plug

– then very gently scoop out the remainder of the audio plug by using the edge of the audio-jack for leverage

– when you feel a very tiny click, the remainder of the audio-plug has come loose, and will fall out if you turn the iPad upside down

– pfff… relax… congrats… done !
